Removing Scratches from the Glass

Making the Glass Great Again

As mentioned in my last post, I accidentally scratched the glass bottle (for the ship-in-a-bottle) while putting the clay inside. The scratches were minor but noticeable at close range:

I looked online and read about different ways to buff out glass, with the caveat that it often does not work. I went to Lowes and bought the only compound they had – Brasso metal polish. I was a bit dejected, but decided to give it a shot.

I came home and tried polishing a small piece on the outside, near the bottom (which is obscured by the stand it rests on). The glass did not fog… which was promising. I applied some Brasso inside and scrubbed with a toothbrush for quite some time. The results are very good! The scratches are either gone or have become very light:

The white residue in the photo has since been washed off.

I’m now gluing the bottle onto the stand, as it sits very precariously. After the glue has dried, I need to ensure the clay has dried, apply lacquer, fix up the ship, put the ship in the bottle, apply appropriate glue, and then seal the bottle. Almost there!
